Vincenzo Barnaba (Vincenzo Barnaba) carried out his scientific research mainly at the Dipartimento of Internal Medicine of Roma "La Sapienza" – Medicine Faculty. Vincenzo Barnaba has been active as an immunologist for 25 years. The group lead by Vincenzo Barnaba has a long-standing interest in the pathogenesis of immune-mediated diseases, including autoimmune and viral (hepatitis viruses, HIV) diseases. In particular, the Vincenzo Barnaba group’s research aims at establishing the role of HBV and HCV in inducing chronic infection and the role of viruses in inducing autoimmunity, such as the ability of HIV to unveil cryptic self-epitopes.

His main research interest is in the study of platelet activation and inhibition in atherothrombosis. His research has characterized the human pharmacology of aspirin as an inhibitor of platelet cyclooxygenase activity and provided the basis for the development of low-dose aspirin as an antithrombotic agent.

His main research interest has been the immunopathology of macrophages and the pathogenesis of lymphoproliferative diseases. He gave a major contribution in the understanding of the mechanisms of macrophage activation against tumors. He has investigated the role of soluble factors (cytokines) in the development of lymphoproliferative diseases with particular emphasis to Hodgkin's lymphoma.
